French Antilles
The drum rhythm urges everyone to dance.
In XVIIth century French Antilles, the sound of the bele and the gwo ka was the music of the black slaves.
The XIXth century brought freedom.
The dance mixes foreign musical genres: Haitian Kompas, Trinidadian Calypso and of course, the Antillean Biguine.
In the 1980’s the group Kassav incorporated all the genres and created Zouk whose success was overwhelming several years later in Paris.
