Based on the cult of Dionysus, this unbridled dance is used as a therapeutic tool as well as a way to free one’s mind.

After the Council of Tren, Italian life was ruled by a very strict brand of Catholicism. As an escape, the Tarentella, a lively dance appears in the South.

Taking its name from the spider, the tarantula (whose bite was believed to be a cure) the music seems to perpetrate the pagan rite of Dionysus, another attempt to oppose the Church.

The dance trance-like can go on for hours. People still dance the Tarentella in Puglia, in south west Italy.
